Monet – “Impression. Sunrise”

Claude Monet, the most famous representative of French impressionism, painted the canvas “Impression. Sunrise “in 1872. The exposure of this painting and the subsequent negative criticism of it gave the name to a whole trend in art.

It all started with an exhibition in 1874 “Salon of the Outcast”. This exhibition featured works by artists who were rejected by the Paris Salon, considering them inconsistent with the canons of traditional academic painting. Louis Leroy, a critic of Le Charivari magazine, having visited the Salon of Les Miserables, in a dismissive tone writes an article about the salon under the title “Exhibition of the Impressionists”, taking as a basis the title of Claude Monet’s painting “Impression. Rising Sun”. This is how the name appeared for a whole movement in painting, and then in literature and music.

Claude Monet, like all impressionists, in the painting “Impression. Rising Sun ”pays a lot of attention to color. The artist deliberately shows the sky and the sun dim so that the viewer can feel the dampness and coolness of the sea morning. But at the same time, Monet achieves this effect with very rich colors, delighting and surprising the viewer.

The fate of the painting was not easy: it was kidnapped, returned. And most importantly, it became the beginning of a new view of the world and its sensations.
